GARDEN TALK

I had a few busy days with work, lots of clients to care for and I had to look after my granddaughter who was a bit ill and couldn’t go to school but today is wednesday and I have a free day all to my self and guess what I am going to do today ? Yes ! You all guessed right !

The weather was reasonable the last few days, apart from a few heavy showers. What with the temperatures arround 20 C° it looks as everything is finally growing a bit, the flowers don’t look very happy cos of the rain but the plants are thriving ofcourse. It is only June 20 th today and already it is the wettest June in 30 years !

My plants in the greenhouse are doing well, I have 1 paprika plant and it has about 7 fruits and loads of flowers and buds, it’s the first time I am trying to grow paprika’s, last year I tried hot peppers and I got masses and masses of peppers from 1 plant, they kept flowering and producing till the first frosts. But then my husband got a lot of dried and chopped peppers, he is a buyer and buys (amongst other things ofcourse) a lot of different spices so from time to time he gets spices to take home, this time it were peppers so now I have peppers for a few years I think.

Yesterday I was going through a plant magasine and I read that when you cut off the first flowers of your tomato plants your plants will get bigger, the tomato’s will get bigger and you’ll get more tomato’s, have any of you guys heard or tried this before ? I finally have flowers on my tomato plants and I think it would hurt to cut them off !!!

Here are some pictures I took yesterday.

MY CLEMATIS ETOILE VIOLETTE STARTED FLOWERING AND WILL GO ON TILL THE FIRST FROSTS. IT’S A VITICELLA SO THE FLOWERS ARE SMALLER BUT THE PLANTS ARE STRONGER AND DON’T GET ILLNESSES EASY

THIS IS CLEMATIS DURANDII, IT’S A YOUNG PLANT, I PLANTED IT LAST YEAR AND A WHILE AGO I PLANTED A HONEYSUCKLE AGAINST THE SAME WALL (LONICERA PERICLYMENUM)

A WEEK AGO I TOOK THIS PICTURE AND YESTERDAY IT LOOKED LIKE THIS

SO YOU SEE HOW SLOW EVERYTHING GROWS OVER HERE

THIS IS ONE OF MY WHITE FOXGLOVES IN FRONT OF THE DARK LEAFS OF MY LILAC (SYRINGA VULGARIS BEAUTY OF MOSCOW), WHITE FOXGLOVES ARE MY FAVORITES. AS FOR THE LILAC, IT HAS SOFT PINK BUDS AND THEN THEY OPEN AND YOU HAVE A PURE WHITE LILAC WITH A LOVEY SMELL, EACH YEAR I CUT EVERY FLOWER OFF TO PUT IN MY LIVINGROOM SO WHEN YOU COME IN MY LIVINGROOM YOU GET THE SMELL OF HEAVEN !

Now it’s time to do some work. Have a great day and enjoy your garden as much as you can !!

A SUNDAY IN JUNE

Today is Sun-day but the sun keeps playing games, now she’s here, then she’s gone again. We have about 20 C° but the sky is grey, I’m not complaining cos this kind of weather is ideal for me to work in the garden. I’ve been working in the garden all morning so I thought I deserved a bit of a break and a cup of tea.

I took some pictures this morning for you to see some more of what is going on in my garden.

THIS HEAD IS SOMETHING I MADE IN A WORKSHOP A FEW YEARS AGO, I MADE THIS WITH THE INTENTION OF PUTTING SUCCULENTS IN BUT I FORGOT ALL ABOUT IT UNTILL RECENTY, FINALLY LAST WEEK I GAVE HIM A BIT OF SUCCULENT HAIR, IT’S A SEDUM BUT IT HAS TO GROW A BIT MORE

MY HOSTA’S ARE GETTING BUDS, I LIKE HOSTA LEAFS A LOT, THE BIGGER THE BETTER BUT WHEN THEIR BLOOMS ARE NEW AND FRESH THEY LOOK LIKE A MILLIONDOLLAR PICTURE !

JASMINBLOOMS, THE LATIN NAME IS PHILADELPHUS AND THIS IS “BELLE ETOILE”, SMELL’S GORGEOUS !

THIS IS A PERENNIAL CALLED ARUNCUS DIOICUS, BUT PEOPLE CALL IS GOATS BEARD. IT NEEDS SHADE AND MOIST SOIL SO I PLANTED IT BEHIND THE POND, IT SEEMS HE LIKES IT THERE COS IT IS HUGE, IT LOOKS MORE LIKE A BUSH THAN LIKE A PERENNIAL, WHAT YOU SEE IS ONLY A SMALL PIECE OF IT AS I WANTED YOU TO SHOW THE BLOOMS

ISN’T SHE GORGEOUS MY ROSA CONSTANCE SPRY !? SHE IS PRICKLY THOUGH, MY HUSBAND IS VERY MUCH AFRAID OF MRS SPRY AS SHE ALWAYS GRABS HIM WHERE SHE CAN AND THEN HE CRIES FOR MY HELP ! CAN YOU IMAGINE !

Now I go and do a bit more in the garden as this afternoon it is my granddaughters first school fair and she has to “perform” for hundreds of people, she is 2,5 years old and ever so cute.

HAVE A NICE AND SUNNY SUNDAY ALL EXCEPT FOR THOSE WHO NEED RAIN, I WHISH I COULD SENT YOU SOME RAINCLOUDS WHO SOFTLY LET THE RAIN DRIP ONTO YOUR THIRSTY GARDEN

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR VISIT !!

ODE TO THE SUNFLOWER

The sunflower, I think  is the most painted flower in Europe. Almost everyone with a garden has a few sunflowers growing somewhere as they are so easy to grow, you put a sunflowerseed in the soil and up she goes, looking for the sun. Many sunflowers grow where  a bird dropped a seed. Here in Belgium we all like to feed the birds, we give them mixed seeds and there are always sunflowerseeds in it. We also give them fatball’s, a ball made of vegetable fat mixed with seeds, the birds just love them !So often they drop a seed as they are always fighting for them and so you see sunflowers in the strangest places.

What I find so fascinating about sunflowers is that they always turn their heads toward the sun, if there is no sun they let their heads hang as if they are sad. But when the sun shines they just look brilliant.

I love to photograph them, so here are a few pics for you to see.

In France, Spain and Italy they have huge fields full of sunflowers, they use them to produce sunfloweroil. Especially in France those sunflowerfields look spectacular in combination with the lavenderfields who are used for the perfume industrie, so if you ever want to visit France, I sugest you go to the south (Provence)  in June to see the sunflowers and the lavender . You certainly won’t regret it !

HAVE A GREAT DAY !

SOME GARDEN TALK

Today it is 15 C° and the sky is grey with dark grey clouds. For me this is ideal weather to do something in the garden.

I went to my greenhouse and took some pictures.

HERE YOU SEE TWO POTS WITH DARK LEAFED BASIL, ONE POT HAS A LITTLE OF THE GREEN BASIL IN IT, YOU SEE ONION PIPES, LETTUCE, THE BIGGEST PLANT IS AN EGG PLANT, IT HAS FLOWERS BUT NO FRUITS YET

HERE YOU SEE LETTUCE, ONON PIPES, LEEKS, AND SELLERY, THE SELLERY IS FOR CUTTING, YOU CUT WHAT YOU NEED AND IT GROWS BACK, AGAIN AND AGAIN

CABBAGE AND FENNEL, AND UNDER THE BIG CABBAGE LEAF YOU SEE A TAGETES BUT IT IS NOT IN BLOOM YET

THIS IS ONE OF MY TOMATO PLANTS AND IF YOU LOOK CLOSELY YOU CAN SEE THE FIRST FLOWER BUDS !!

I know most of you already have ripe tomato’s or at least some big green ones but what with the cold and rainy weather we’ve been having for month’s now (with a few warm days inbetween) nothing is growing very well except for the weeds. Do you see that dark ring I planted my tomato in ? It’s a water reservoir, you can put 3 liters of water in it and it drips slowly into the ground, it’s the first time I am using this. As for the tagetes I mentioned earlier, I plant tagetes between my veggies and garlic to keep the bugs away, tagetes are so easy to grow from seed ! Over here we call tagetes  “stinky’s” cos of their smell. I like the ones with the little yellow flowers as they look so sunny to me.

HERE WE ARE BACK IN THE GARDEN, THIS IS AN EVERGREEN FERN : POLYSTICHUM POLYBLEPHARUM

ONE OF MY PLANTERS WITH “WILD” STRAWBERRY’S : FRAGARIA VESCA ( I BOUGHT THEM IN A PLANTCENTER I DID NOT GET THEM FROM THE WILD), THEY ARE VERY EASY TO PROPAGATE, THE FRUITS ARE VERY SMALL BUT TASTE LOVELY ALAS THE BIRDS NOW THAT TOO SO I HAVE TO KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON THE BERRY’S, THE PLANTS START FLOWERING EARLY IN SPRING AND THEY GO ON FLOWERING AND PRODUCING FRUIT TILL THE FIRST FROST, ALL THEY NEED IS A PLACE IN THE SHADE/SEMI-SHADE AND ENOUGH WATER

MY ANGELWING BEGONIA , IT IS NOT IN BLOOM YET BUT UNDER THE LEAFS I CAN SEE SOME BUDS, IT’ S ONE WITH WHITE BELL SHAPED FLOWERS,  AM LOOKING FORWARD TO THE FIRST FLOWERS !

A FUCHSIA TOGETHER WITH A SMALL SEDUM : SEDUM SPURIUM IN A POT, THIS SEDUM IS SUCH A LOVELY PLANT, I OFTEN USE IT TO COVER THE SOIL IN A POT, IT IS A TRAILING SEDUM AND YOU CAN CUT IT SHORT OR LEAVE IT  HANGING OVER THE EDGE OF THE POT, IT’S ALWAYS HAPPY, IT IS EVERYWHERE IN MY GARDEN, YOU CAN PUT IT EVERYWHERE : SUN,SHADE, DRY, WET, WHATEVER.

ONE OF MY SEMPERVIVUMS WITH PROMISING BUDS, I JUST REPLANTED IT, THE LITTLE GREEN STUMPS YOU SEE IS OF ANOTHER SEDUM : SEDUM ACRE AND IT GETS BRIGHT YELLOW LITTLE FLOWERS, SO PRETTY ! AND SO SUNNY !

MAY I INTRODUCE YOU TO ONE OF MY BEST GARDEN HELPERS, IDEAL FOR REMOVING WEEDS, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU DON’T HAVE A LOT OF MUSCLE, I WOULD NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO WITHOUT IT

And now I want to go and do something in the garden, I have the whole day to myself and I love it but first I’m going to have a cup of tea in the garden so I can see what needs my attention the most.

Thank you all for reading my blog, have a great day and enjoy your garden
