WHAT IS HAPPENING IN MY GARDEN AT THE MOMENT

Winter was long, freezing and wet. We didn’t get Spring, we went from Winter into Summer so plants are way behind their normal blooming time. Normally June is the most beautiful time in my garden with lots of blooms but today my garden still looks pretty green.

I walked through my garden this morning and made some pictures for you.

WHO KNOWS THIS PLANT

I bought my first garden bromeliad, I have had bromeliads before but they were house plants, this one is for the garden and it is supposed to be winter hardy ! It is called fascicularia bicolor, it comes from Chili, it can stay in the sun, half shade or shade and is winter hardy till – 10 C°, wants sandy soil. I have never seen a bromeliad like this one, it is supposed to get a big red flower at the end of Summer. Has any of you experience with this plant? If so can you please tell me if it is an easy plant and is it really winter hardy ????

This is how it looks at the moment :

Have a great week all and enjoy your garden !

WALK WITH ME

Today I took my camera and took a stroll through my garden to see what is going on. We are now in the middle of May and it is still cold, too cold for the time of the year and it has been raining for a few days now, that is good as the garden was bone dry. With the rain everything grew a bit and the garden is a lot greener than a few days back.

ALLIUM URSINUM WITH A FEW SHOOTS OF MELISSA OFFICINALIS. THE ALLIUM LEAFS AND FLOWERS ARE LOVELY IN A GREEN SALAD AND FROM THE LEAFS OF THE MELISSA YOU CAN MAKE A LOVELY LEMON TEA, YOU TAKE A FEW LEAFS, POOR HOT WATER ON THEM AND LET IT BE FOR A FEW MINUTES, AND VOILA YOU HAVE A LOVELY HEALTHY TEA THAT TASTES LIKE LEMON TEA, OR YOU CAN ADD A FEW LEAFS TO YOUR ORDINARY TEA TO GIVE IT A LEMONY TASTE

THESE DAHLIA’S ARE WAITING FOR A PLACE IN THE GARDEN, THEY WERE IN THE GREENHOUSE FOR A WHILE BUT THEY ARE HARDENING OFF OUTSIDE AND THEY ARE ENJOYING THE RAIN

THIS CUTIE WAS ENJOYING THE WET WEATHER TOO, I NEVER KILL THEM, I LET THE BIRDS IN THE GARDEN DO THEIR JOB AND THEY DO

13052013tuinfoto's 024

MELISSA OFFICINALIS, GROWS LIKE MAD AND SELFSEEDS LIKE MAD BUT IS EASILY REMOVED, YOU CAN REMOVE THE FLOWERS BEFORE THEY SET SEEDS, THAT HELPS OFCOURSE, YOU CAN DRY THE LEAFS AND USE THEM IN POT-POURRI

Enjoy your garden !

TOO LATE BUT…

Beautiful as always ! My amelanchier in bloom at last, 4 weeks later than usual ! This tree is about 30 years old, we have trimmed it a lot over the years. normally it is a bush but you can easily make a tree of it by cutting the lower branches off. It has never been in bloom so late in Spring, always at the 1st of April and occasionally a few days later but never 4 weeks late ! If you look at my blog I did 4 days ago you can see what the sun did in just 4 days time !

DON’T THEY LOOK CUTE THESE LITTLE FLOWERS !

We had 2 lovely Spring days with temperatures above 20 C°, we had lunch and dinner in the garden. Alas, today is cold and wet, 8 C° !!!! Can you believe this ??!!!! We needed the rain so I am pleased with it as the soil in the garden was so  terribly dry.  And my water barrels are now full again !The weekend will be cold and wet too so no gardening for me except for some jobs in the greenhouse.

I hope you’ll all have a great sunny and warm weekend full of fun in the garden !!!

SPRING PICTURES

I took some pictures in my garden today, the sun was shining and it looked very much like Spring but it was still very cold cos of the cold wind we had so I did some gardening in my greenhouse where it was lovely and warm.
