I recently read an article about how you can find out if your seeds are still viable. You take a glas, put some water in it and the seeds you want to sow, the seeds that lay on top of the water are dead, those who sink to the bottom are still alive. I did the test and here is the picture :
IT IS NOT A CLEAR PICTURE BUT YOU CAN SEE SEEDS FLOATING ON THE WATER AND OTHERS AT THE BOTTOM
I thought this was worth sharing with you, perhaps many of you already knew this but I’m sure some of you didn’t.
After a week of lovely Spring weather were are back in Winter with snow predicted for the next days and minus temperatures even during the day !!
Have a great Sunday all !
I am so pleased life is finally back to normal ! I can start looking forward to Spring now, however…. Winter has yet to come. We’ve had lots and lots of rain, grey sky’s and soft temperatures (arround 10-12 C°) so many plants and shrubs are budding.
BUDDLEJA BUDS (butterfly bush)
CLIMBING HYDRANGEA BUDS
BUD OF A RHODODENDRON SHRUB
BUT…now they are predicting snow and ice for next weekend !!! The rhododendron and the climbing hydrangea will be ok but I fear for the budleja buds and for the clematis buds as well as for my tiny figs who are already on my fig tree….ofcourse we knew Winter was coming sooner or later but my plants didn’t, they think it is Spring already !
I so want to start working in the garden, I had the builders in and they made a nice terrace in the garden and they paved all the gardenpath’s who were made of gravel but were a lot of work to keep weed free, I also have a new garden next to the big terrace close to my house which is full of weeds at the moment, I had hoped my husband would have cleared that piece of garden and had it ready to plant in Autumn but he was too busy with his birds so now it will have to wait till Spring.
I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas ! Only a few more days left and we’ll get a brand new year with lots of possibilities !
As there is not much going on in the garden I thought I could show you some of my favorite pictures.
ALL THESE PICTURES COME FROM MY BLOGS WHICH I STARTED ABOUT 6 MONTH’S AGO
HAVE A GREAT END OF THE YEAR AND MAY 2013 BE THE BEST YEAR EVER !!!!
Do you remember my white begonia ?
THIS ONE !
Well, it is not winterhardy in Belgium so I removed the bulb from the pot and what did I see ?
A WHOLE LOT OF THESE GUYS !!!
Does anyone know what these are ? They are about 1 cm long, some a bit bigger others a bit smaller, there were at least 20 or more in the pot ! And look what they did !
THIS IS THE CLEANED BULB, I CLEANED IT UNDER THE TAP SO MOST “MAGGOT’S ?”WERE GONE, THEN I INSPECTED THE BULB AND SAW THAT THERE WERE MORE AND I REMOVED THEM AND THEN I SAW WHAT THEY DID TO THE BULB, LOOK !!!
THEY HAVE EATEN PARTS OF THE BULB !!! I HOPE THE BULB WILL SURVIVE SO I CAN PLANT IT AGAIN IN SPRING, I AM GOING TO LET IT DRY A BIT AND WRAP IT IN A BIT OF NEWSPAPER AND PUT IT IN AN OLD FREEZER TO KEEP IT FROST FREE AND COOL, TOGETHER WITH SOME FUCHSIA’S AND SOME DAHLIA BULBS
When you are gardening you always get surprises, sometimes good sometimes bad, this was a bad one, the plant looked awful but I thought it was cos of the night frosts we recently had.
I’ll tell you in Spring if the bulb survived the Winter or not, I loved this begonia, it has been blooming for a long time and it became more and more beautiful when it became bigger, now this bulb is about 4 times bigger than it was in Spring when I planted it.
Take care and enjoy your garden when you can !!! And thanks for stopping by.
ONE OF MY CLIENTS HAS A GARDEN CENTER AND I SHOWED HIM THE MAGGOTS, HE SAID IT’S VINE WEEVEL, SO NOW I HAVE TO INSPECT ALL MY POTS !!! AND I HAVE MANY !!!
Fall is not so spectacular over here as it is in the States but I managed to take a few pics.
THIS PICTURE WAS TAKEN 2 WEEKS AGO
AND THIS IS THE SAME REE TODAY, IT’S AN AMELANCHIER
YOU CAN SEE THERE IS STILL A LOT OF GREEN IN MY GARDEN
THE HOSTA IS STARTING TO DIE DOWN, ALWAYS A SAD SIGHT
AND THE MARIGOLDS STILL GIVING LOADS OF BLOOMS, SO FAR WE WERE LUCKY WITH THE WEATHER, NO FROST YET AND WE HAD 22 C° TODAY, THIS IS NOT NORMAL FOR OKTOBER OVER HERE ! BUT I AM NOT COMPLAINING !!!
Have a great weekend all, thanks for stopping by and enjoy your garden !!!!
