PLANTPORTRAIT : INDIAN MOCK STRAWBERRY

Indian mock strawberry, latin name : potentilla indica/duchesna indica, originates from India (hence the name indica).

HERE IT IS, IT’S THE ONE WITH THE STRAWBERRY-LIKE LEAFS AND THE YELLOW BUTTERCUP-LIKE FLOWERS. GOOD GROUNDCOVER FOR LARGE AREA’S WITH BUSHES AND TREE’S BUT BEWARE IT IS A CULPRIT, A POWERFUL GROWER AND I THINK IT’S A PRETTY PLANT, IT BLOOMS FROM APRIL TILL OKTOBER AND AFTER THE FLOWERS IT GETS BRIGHT RED STRAWBERRY-LIKE FRUITS WHO DON’ TASTE WELL. THE PLANT DISAPPEARS UNDER GROUND IN WINTER AND STARTS GROWING RAPIDLY IN SPRING.

WHEN YOU USE IT AS GROUNDCOVER WITH BUSHES WHO ARE AT LEAST 50 CM HIGH IT IS GOOD. IT SUFFOCATES ALL THE WEEDS BUT WHEN USED AS GROUNDCOVER AMONG PLANTS AND SMALL BUSHES IT WILL OVERGROW THEM ALL.

HERE IS THE CULPRIT AGAIN, DO YOU SEE THE TINY WHITE FLOWERS ? WELL THAT IS MY WHITE HEATHER !!!      I REMOVED THE INDIAN STRAWBERRY RIGHT AFTER I TOOK THESE PICTURES, NOT A MOMENT TOO SOON !

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND ALL AND ENJOY YOUR GARDEN !!

HERE YOU SEE THE NOSES OF THE FIRST NARCISSUS, IN THE CORNER ON THE RIGHT THERE IS POTENTILLA INDICA ALSO CALLED DUCHESNEA INDICA, IN ENGLISH IT IS CALLED INDIAN STRAWBERRY, YOU CAN EVEN SEE THE FIRST STRAWBERRY. THIS PLANT IS GOOD GROUNDCOVER, IN SPRING IT COVERS THE GROUND REALLY QUICKLY AND YOU GET BRIGHT YELLOW FLOWERS UP TILL THE FIRST FROST, THE STRAWBERRY LIKE FRUITS ARE BRIGHT RED, THEY DON’T TASTE GOOD BUT THEY ARE NOT POISONOUS, AND THE PLANTS CAN EASILY BE REMOVED WHERE THEY ARE NOT WANTED.
