SLOWLY SLIDING TOWARD AUTUMN

I don’t like it but it is true, the first signs of Autumn are visible in the garden and in the air, you can already smell it and the nights are almost cold. The leaves of the trees and shrubs are looking a bit tired, the sedums have buds who start to colour, the spiders ( those with the cross on their backs who are only visible late in Summer and in Autumn) are weaving their nets….I am not a fan of Autumn however beautiful it can be. We have had quite a bit of sun lately with showers now and again so everything has been growing like mad.

One of the fasted growers in my garden is the Russian vine(polygonum aubertii) over here we call it “brides veil” my husband uses this climber to give to his birds otherwise it would not have been in my garden, it is just too big, we have to cut it down every year in Spring otherwise it takes over the whole garden !!! But it is pretty and the flowers last for a very long time !

AN ORDINARY SUNDAY IN AUGUST

I cannot believe it is August already ! Lately we have had quite a bit of hot weather so everything is growing like mad, however some plants suffer from the heath. The fuchsia flowers and the roses don’t stay fresh for long and I can’t keep up watering all the pots. But I am not complaining as I love being outside, sitting on the terrace and looking at the garden.

The birds and the bees and the butterflies apparently love my garden, they are everywhere but they are very hard to catch on camera. But I am happy to have them in my garden and I love to see they like it.

VIEWS OF MY WORLD

Today was a quiet Sunday, grey but dry, very windy but not too cold. I always walk through my garden several times a day, for my enjoyment but also to see if everything is ok, to see if all my plants have enough water and to see if they are all doing fine. After many years of experience I can now see when a plant is not feeling well so I can do something about it, give it another place, more sun, less sun, or some fertilizer….usually the plant will be ok afterwards but I do have the occasional death and then I feel awful.

Here are a few pictures for you of how things look at the moment.

LATE BLOOMERS

THIS  IS A GIFT FROM MY BIRDS, THEY DROPPED ONE OF THE SEEDS I GAVE THEM AND IT DEVELOPPED INTO A BEAUTIFULL FLOWER

MICHAELMAS DAISY’S, I AM NOT SO KEEN ON THEM AS THEY DEVELLOP A LOT !!! OF UNDERGROUND RUNNERS, IT’S A WEED I CAN’T GET RID OFF BUT AS THE BUTTERFLIES AND THE BEE’S LOVE IT SO MUCH I ALLOW IT INTO MY GARDEN, I PULL EVERY SHOOT OUT IN AUTUMN BUT EVERY  TINY PIECE OF ROOT LEFT IN THE GROUND MAKES A NEW PLANT IN SPRING !!!

ROSA THE PILGRIM (AUSTIN ROSE) BLOOMS ON AND OFF FROM JUNE TILL THE FIRST FROST, SMELLS LOVELY

ANOTHER LATE BLOOMER, TRICYRTIS HIRTUS ALSO CALLED : THE POOR MAN’S ORCHID, I LOVE IT !!!

KIRENGOSHOMA PALMATA, IN THE BACKGROUND YOU SEE THE REMAINS OF A FERN

ASPLENIUM NIDUS, AN EVERGEEN FERN AND VERY WINTERHARDY ALTHOUGH IT’S LEAVES  ARE  IN WINTER NOT AS BEAUTIFULL AS IN SUMMER

FUCHSIA’S ALLWAYS GOOD FOR SOME AUTUMN COLOUR, IN THE BACK YOU CAN SEE THE REMAINS OF SOME CLEMATIS

ANOTHER GIFT OF MY BIRDS, THIS SUNFLOWER IS HUGE !! THE BUD IS STILL SMALL BUT I HOPE IT WILL BECOME HUGE TOO. ON THE LEFT AGAINST THE FENCE YOU CAN SEE A LOT OF BIRD DROPPINGS, EVERY MORNING THE BIRDS SIT THERE AND WAIT UNTILL I FEED THEM

I BOUGHT SOME YELLOW ASTERS, THEY LOOK SO SUNNY ! HAVE TO GIVE THEM A BIGGER POT SO I CAN PUT THEM NEAR THE FRONTDOOR TO WELCOME MY CLIENTS AND MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS

AS YOU CAN SEE MY FIGS ARE GETTING BIGGER AND BIGGER BUT WILL THEY GET RIPE ???

THESE SEDUMS ATTRACT A LOT OF BUTTERFLIES AND BEE’S, I LOVE TO SIT ON THE TERRACE AND SEE THEM COME AND GO BUT THEY ARE HARD TO CATCH ON CAMERA

In a few days we will be leaving for our holliday in Croatia, nature is beautifull overthere so I hope to make a lot of pictures for my blog.

Take care and have fun in your garden guys !

MY GARDEN AT THE MOMENT

What is going on in  my garden at the moment ? Not much really. Each day we get more signs that Autumn is coming closer fast. Today was a nice day with a bit of sun and 23 C°, yesterday it was 17 C° and it was raining very very hard, it’s typical for many Belgian Summers, one day this and the next day something completely different.

But, a miracle has happened with my fig tree, remember when I told you back in May that it only had little green buds instead of being in full leaf ? It has grown sooooo much and there are soooo many figs on it too. They won’t get ripe this year but who knows, I see they are rapidly becoming bigger….When ripe they are not big and bold like the exotic figs but small and yellowish green, red on the inside ofcourse.

THIS WAS MY FIG TREE BACK IN MAY

SEE THE LITTLE BUDS ON IT ?

LOOK AT IT NOW !!!!

LOOK AT ALL THE LITTLE FIGS !

So NEVER give up on a fig tree too soon !!! He was this Winter in my garden, unprotected ,and we had temperatures of -18 C° !!! He is standing against a South faced wall though.

IT’S SEDUM TIME ! A CLOSE-UP OF A FLOWER

HERES’ THE SAME SEDUM TOGETHER WITH GERANIUM ROZANNE WHO HAS BEEN BLOOMING SINCE MAY
